9-year-old Joe Maldonado became the first openly transgender Boy Scout last Tuesday, reported Philly.com. This follows close on the heels of the BSA’s decision to allow transgender boys into the organization.
Maldonado joined Maplewood, New Jersey’s Pack 20, after previously being banned from a Secaucus group following complaints from other parents.
“This is fun; I’m so proud,” Maldonado said. His mother is happy he has found acceptance.
The Boy Scouts released a statement regarding the milestone which said, “moving forward, the BSA will continue to work to bring the benefits of our programs to as many children, families and communities as possible.”
