It has often been said that if a relationship can make it through a home remodeling job, a couple can survive any future obstacle. My wife and I have now made it through both basement and kitchen remodels and ten years later we’re still together to talk about our experience.
While we’ve tackled a number of obstacles in our ten years together, none compared to the three weeks we lived without a kitchen.
After asking for referrals, determining a budget, requesting price quotes and proposals, deciding on the best company for the job, and then questioning whether or not we made the right decision, we moved onto the endless design questions.
Did we want granite, or marble? Short cabinets or tall cabinets? Tile backsplash, or glass backsplash? Should we design to our liking, or will we sell in the future and design for longevity?
One might argue that price and workmanship are the two most important components to assess when selecting a contractor, but for LGBT individuals, there are other factors to consider.
When we decided on our contractor, we asked ourselves the following questions: As two women, will we be safe working with this company? Do we have to worry about being disrespected as a couple? Will we be comfortable being ourselves at home? Have their employees had LGBT sensitivity training? For transgender folks, these questions are even more important to ask.
It’s rare to hear about a home remodeling company in the suburbs investing their marketing money into the LGBT community, but Ramsey Builders, LLC has done just that.
