Although the organization lacks a physical center at this time, the LGBT Qmunity Center is raising money to support grassroots outreach, community programs, and eventually a space of their own.
The group’s mission states that they “strive to provide and promote resources to increase the visibility, acceptance, equality, well being, health and self respect of LGBTQ people in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and increase awareness in the community of the needs and contributions of LGBTQ people.”
The center was founded earlier last year by a small team of community supporters, including Joe Cairo, now President of the organization.
When asked about current outreach initiatives, Cairo says, “we run a number of different programs, including the Betty White Club for seniors, Threads of Life, focusing on religion and homosexuality, and an LGBT Book Club.”
The group also attended a Centerlink Leadership Summit in September, which provided education on developing and implementing strategies to help strengthen LGBT center leadership. The also networked with LGBT Centers across the country. They plan to use their training to develop a strong strategic plan and board structure.
The Masqueerade Bingo event on Saturday is their second bingo event this year. Their first event raised $10,000 and they intend to hold another in December.
There are cash prizes for BINGO games, including a jackpot round. Attendees will also have a chance to win money and prizes in the 50/50 and raffle.
And don’t forget to wear your costume, as there will be a contest.
Doors open at 5:30pm Bingo starts at 7:00pm. Entertainment, food, bingo cards, and daubers will be provided.
**Cash bar will be available for refreshments and cocktails**
